Structural Integration is a type of deep tissue bodywork based on the work of Dr. Ida Rolf. The work focuses on creating more balance within the body through deep, slow, exploratory work through neuromuscular and connective tissue (fascial) layers of the body. The sessions are participatory, with some active movements and with the training of present attention, increasing awareness of the sensations of restrictions and alignment, in order to be able to bring back the possibility of choosing alignment .
Most of us have learned unhealthy postural and mental patterns of tension -- from society, parents, accidents, stress, and misinformation. Over years, these patterns build up into limitations and pain. But we can relearn patterns of ease and openness. To target not only the symptoms of tension and limitation, but also the deeply patterned causes, means to learn awareness of these connections.
We can find more embodied awareness, more balance within gravity, more alignment anatomically and between our behaviors and values, more plasticity, and more sense of connection -- within ourselves and within our environment.
Why 10 sessions?
The 10 Sessions focus on discovering and clearing imbalance, tension, and subtle misalignments in the body, while being open to explore how these might be tied to behavior or thought patterns that keep them solid. Becoming aware of chronic patterns and deep beliefs in a holistic and empowering way is not something that can be achieved within one or two sessions alone. Each of the sessions contributes its own goals, with cumulative results, knowledge, home practices and awareness. Physically, the first 3 sessions focus on the surface muscles and superficial layers of tissue; the next 4 on the core of the body; and the final 3 on integrating the body and exploring a deeper sense of alignment, wholeness, and balance.
An integrative mind-Body Method
Conscious or subconscious emotional aspects or beliefs are often the foundation of tensions in the body. If we remain unaware of the influence of our emotional/mental patterns effects on our physical habits, these patterns make it hard to regain long-term balance in the body because the patterns are two sides of the same coin, with feedback loops into the other. Daily posture, physical tensions, and movements are cumulative results of life experiences, both physical and mental/emotional experiences -- and all our layers of beliefs from and reactivity to these experiences. It’s all connected!
What to Expect
Each session includes check-in time, body-readings before and after, the bodywork itself, and suggestions about stretches or exercises to take home to support your individual needs. These sessions about 2 hours long. I ask those doing the 10 Sessions to wear comfortable underwear during the work, and to expect to gently move and actively participate in the work, both on or off the table, as well as between sessions. These sessions can be deeply relaxing, and they can also be intense. Many sensations will be new, and at times unexpected tension or emotions can come up. These sessions will also include much more communication than is usual for massage. We will be working together to support your individual needs.
